VOL-LA

Every application wants a different radar beam — long and narrow for forward ADAS, wide for a corner sensor, different again for industrial. Conventionally, each one means a slow, bespoke antenna redesign. VOL-LA is Provizio’s way around that: metallised 3D-printed waveguide antennas, combined with MIMSO® sparse-array design, let a new field-of-view, range or gain profile be designed, printed and validated in weeks.

Applications

Where antenna configuration is the variable that changes between applications.

Automotive

Address multiple sensor positions — forward, corner and surround — from one common radar platform. Each position gets the waveguide profile that matches its own range and field-of-view needs, with no change to the electronics.

Industrial

Mining, agriculture, construction and warehouse environments each demand a different perception profile — from long-range detection across wide-open sites to wide-angle coverage inside tight, confined spaces.

Smart cities

Highway and intersection monitoring each need their own coverage — long-range along a lane, or wide-angle across a junction. A different waveguide profile suits each role, all on one shared radar platform.

Multi-platform

OEMs and Tier 1s building radar lines for several markets can rationalise to a single radar platform plus a whole family of interchangeable waveguide assemblies — one design base, many products.

How it works

An interchangeable waveguide antenna system that retargets radar performance.

STEP 01

Waveguide antenna architecture

VOL-LA uses a slotted-waveguide design — radar signals travel through precision-engineered guides and radiate through carefully positioned slots. Compared with a flat PCB array, a waveguide carries the signal with far lower loss, so the same radar gets higher gain, longer range and better sensitivity. And because it’s built in 3D rather than on a flat board, the aperture and feed can be shaped to pack more gain into a smaller footprint — shapes that metallised 3D printing can iterate fast.

SLOTTED WAVEGUIDEThe signal radiates at precision-cut slotsGuided channels lose far less signal than PCB traces

STEP 02

Configurable by design

Each application needs a different field of view, range and gain — so each gets its own slot layout. Because a waveguide can’t pack its slots as tightly as a flat PCB array, Provizio uses its MIMSO® sparse-array methods to place a sparse, carefully-chosen set of slots that keeps angular resolution high in spite of that wider spacing. The radar electronics and the signal-processing chain stay identical — only the antenna’s slot pattern changes.

STEP 03

Interchangeable assemblies

Conventionally a waveguide antenna is a slow, bespoke one-off, tooled for one application. VOL-LA spreads one foundation across many: the same radar electronics serve every profile, and the antenna is a separate part that mates through a waveguide transition. Metallised 3D printing produces each profile in weeks, all while delivering performance on par with machined parts, so the fast iteration costs nothing in quality.

Integration

Works with the full MIMSO® chain

VOL-LA waveguide assemblies are compatible with Provizio’s MIMSO® signal-processing chain — including SPTDMA® multiplexing and RaZIR® resolution enhancement. The sparse-array IP is adapted for waveguide element-spacing constraints, so MIMSO’s performance benefits transfer cleanly to waveguide configurations.

  • Pairs with RaZIR® resolution enhancement
  • Same radar electronics across multiple antenna profiles

VOL-LA FAQ

VOL-LA is Provizio’s interchangeable, design-configurable waveguide antenna system. It lets OEMs and integrators retarget radar performance — field of view, range, gain profile — by swapping the waveguide antenna assembly, without redesigning the underlying radar electronics or software.

Planar (PCB-based) antennas are compact, lower cost and suited to high-volume applications where standard performance is acceptable. Waveguide antennas — including VOL-LA — offer higher gain and extended range, plus electromagnetic shielding between the radar electronics and the outside world, but their radiating slots have to sit further apart than on a planar array. VOL-LA adds the design layer — MIMSO® sparse-array optimisation plus rapid metallised 3D printing — that makes the waveguide approach reusable across applications.

Yes. Because waveguide antennas can’t use the half-wavelength spacing of planar designs, Provizio’s antenna team performs dedicated sparse-array optimisations for waveguide configurations. MIMSO’s element-placement optimisation, difference co-array formation and sidelobe suppression are all adapted to work within waveguide constraints.

Provizio has developed metallised 3D-printed waveguide antennas for rapid prototyping, characterised in the lab against production reference antennas. The pipeline takes a customer’s application specification to a working prototype in weeks, with a clear path to a manufacturable design.

VOL-LA is available through Provizio’s licensing and partnership framework. Talk to the antenna team about the application you’re targeting — they’ll work with you on the waveguide configuration that meets your range, FoV and form-factor requirements.
